Research Fellow Wang Zhifeng Won 2016 Award of Outstanding Contribution to Solar Thermal Utilization Technology

   With the New Year upcoming, the 2016 Award for Outstanding Contribution to Solar Thermal Utilization Technology was announced, another good news at the end of 2016. Based on rounds of selection, this award was granted to Doctor Wang Zhifeng in the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on December 20, 2016.

  The award for outstanding contribution to solar thermal utilization technology was established by China National Solar Thermal Energy Alliance (hereinafter referred to as the Alliance), of which specific matters are handled by the Secretariat of the Alliance. It aims to affirm and express gratitude to individuals that make significant contributions to China’s progress in the solar thermal utilization technologies and play an important role in promotion of such technologies.

   This award is assessed in accordance with relevant requirements of Assessment Procedures of 2016 Award for Outstanding Contribution to Solar Thermal Utilization Technology, issued by the Alliance. At first, the Secretariat of the Alliance proposed nine candidates based on investigation. Secondly, the director representatives of the Alliance selected three candidates by means of voting. Then the expert committee of the Alliance determined two campaigners by means of voting. Finally, the campaigners are reported to the president of the Alliance, and the final winner is determined by voting in the joint conference.

   Doctor Wang Zhifeng, the current winner, is an internationally known scholar in the solar thermal power generation field. He has 31-year experience since he started research on solar thermal utilization in the national 7th Five-Year Plan in 1985. Over years, he has been devoted to research on the high-efficiency solar collecting technology and solar thermal power generation system integration technology. As the project manager, he presided over the establishment, core equipment research, system design, construction, commissioning and operation of Beijing Badaling Experiment Station of Solar Thermal Power Generation in the 11th, 12th and 13th Five-Year Plans; proposed that the core of solar thermal power generation is coupling under instable light, heat and power conditions, obtained the support of the National 973 Plan and achieved a series of significant results; and based on in-depth analysis, he proposed that the physical properties of the heat transfer medium of the heat absorber are core factors affecting the efficiency of the power station, put forward the classification of 4th-generation solar thermal power generation technologies based on the properties of the heat transfer medium of the heat absorber, and summarized the route chart of solar thermal power generation technology development in China, which are widely recognized at home and abroad.

    As for industrial promotion, he organized the Alliance and related domestic and foreign units and famous enterprises to study Chinese policies on solar power prices. In the past years, he has edited a series of policy and report suggestions, and actively provided suggestions for the government from multiple perspectives, playing a significant role in launching of Chinese solar power prices in September, 2016. In 2014, Doctor Wang assisted Academician Lu Yongxiang to put forward the suggestion on building of the integrated demonstration zone of renewable energy application in Zhangjiakou, which has been approved by the State Council. The state-level renewable energy demonstration zone was completed in July 2015 and has great significance in renewable energy development of China.
